Fairfax Divorce Attorneys Serves Federal Government Employees

Proficient With Government Retirement Pay & Benefits Issues In Northern Virginia

Federal government employees and their spouses have an added level of complexity to their division of property during divorce, because of assets held by the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). The attorney who represents you must understand how these systems operate, including eligibility requirements, computation of benefits, early retirement options, deferred annuities, survivor benefits and many other issues that could influence the value of your retirement assets.

The Law Offices of Michael Kevin Murphy, PLLC has represented federal government employees in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. for more than 30 years. Our government divorce attorneys in Fairfax have an in-depth knowledge of FERS and CSRS, and we capably manage the other aspects of your divorce as well.

Just a few of the things our firm can assist you with include:

  • Qualified Domestic Relations Orders
  • Orders to Defense Finance and Accounting Service
  • Orders Suitable for Processing
  • Thrift Savings Account Division Orders

Quality Divorce Management From Start To Finish

The Law Offices of Michael Kevin Murphy, PLLC provides high-quality, personalized representation for every aspect of your divorce, including alimony, child custody and visitation, child support and property division.

However, our extensive experience with government employee benefits helps to ensure an equitable distribution of retirement assets within:

  • The Civil Service Retirement System: CSRS began operating on August 1, 1920, establishing a defined benefit, contributory retirement system for certain federal government workers. CSRS-covered employees may also contribute tax-deferred sums to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Their employing agency matches their CSRS contributions but not TSP contributions. Upon retirement, CSRS-covered employees receive an annuity based on years of service and average salaries.
  • The Federal Employees Retirement System: Congress created FERS in 1986 to replace CSRS. Its rules cover federal workers who began service on or after January 1, 1987. The new system oversees federal employee benefits from three component sources: a Basic Benefit Plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Upon retirement, eligible federal government workers receive an annuity from each source for the remainder of their lives.

The firm has an in-depth understanding of the complexities related to these retirement systems, including such crucial issues as survivor benefits to a former spouse. Moreover, the Law Offices of Michael Kevin Murphy, PLLC more than 30 years of combined experience as federal employee and military divorce attorneys has taught them the importance of obtaining court orders suitable for processing under the regulations of the Office of Personnel Management and the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. You can rely on the Law Offices of Michael Kevin Murphy, PLLC to ensure your court order is ready for processing by the appropriate agency.
